Rock Master Rus B EP Drops May 19

I did a 3 song EP for Gazeebo records in exchange for a wonderful remix that Gazeebo did for Funk Weapons a while back. I could have just churned out 3 simple edits and sent them and been done, but I wanted to take the craft a bit further. So all three of the edits contain extra drums, keys and production. Furthermore, Frank helped me mix-down and he added some final touches to make them gel well. I'm really quite happy with the way they came out, and I'm proud to be on Gazeebo which is a fine label.

Making these also helped me break through my writers block, and begin working on some new AGFA tunes and some remixes for Funk Weapons. Hopefully I can find time to get back in the studio and finish them soon, but it's hard with a 17 month old and a 5 week old plying for my attention whenever I am at home. Anyway, I hope you dig them. I should be busting out some more free downloadable edits soon as I have 2 ideas running in my head I would like to finally finish up.

Kurtis Blow, what can I say that haven't been said about dude. He was one of the Original M.C.'s out of New York to really break out big and become a huge star when hip hop was just breaking. He is way over-sampled, to the point that I never want to hear a "These are the breaks" sample again, ever. He broke big way back in 1979 with Christmas Rappin'. Copycat did a little re-edit of Rappin' Blow, which I posted a link too below, as Im sure the soundcloud will die any minute now. I also included "Party Time", which for me is the best Kurtis Blow song ever. As it featured home-town heroes Trouble Funk on the beat.

Sorry for the delay here at FW HQ, my wife had a baby boy last week and I have just been handling family duties and working on some re-edits and new tunes. Frank and I got up this last weekend and played a great outdoor gig here in DC, it was the closing of the Forward Fest and it was such a wonderful day. The picture is of my daughter dance battling a nice couple, while we drop some Sleeve and Stevie Wonder tunes.

I also wanted to mention we got an EP in the works from Rory Hoy coming out in a little bit, the Kool Hertz EP should be out any day now and The Breakbeat Junkie vs DJP EP on Baffin should be out in 2-3 weeks. These are all super hot EP's, and we are looking forward to putting these out.

Axe has been dropping some ghetto funk heat recently and I thought I would share. Dude kicks it from the land of OZ, and while he isn't doing anything super ground breaking, he does just drop solid bombs that seem to work in a lot of situations. I can drop these in a top 40's ish type set or straight up for the underground.

After all the craziness in New Zealand I was thinking about this producer I know Lowman, whom lives in Auckland, New Zealand. Also known as Elton McAleer, Lowman is a sample based producer that I have been following for a while. His songs are sample based and I love the way he keeps his production so loose, raw and soulful. I found out about Lowman from his release with Sleeve on Freestyle Records a couple of years back. Back in the day when Myspace was going, he had an account and he would post these really well done tracks and edits. I downloaded 2 Stevie Wonder remixes from him back when he was posting songs on there that are just killer. I have been begging him for years to let me put em out, but it never worked out for whatever reason. Below I posted a link to his newest remix and mash-up he posted on Soundcloud. Hope everyone has had a decent week, I have been just kinda hurt up all week from raving it up over the weekend, but I think I finally caught up on my sleep and I’m back in action. First off we have a remix of Big Daddy Kane’s “Set it Off” by Freqnik & WDRE, which is a nice updated take on this classic track. It could use a little re-edit to give you some mix in, but I’ll leave that up to you. Next up we got a re-edit of De La Soul’s “Keepin The Faith” by Touchsoul, whom add a nice long mix in intro and outro and retains the original in the middle. I loved De La Soul is dead, it was one of those albums that was on constant repeat on my walkman in high school along with Black Sheep, Public Enemy and Slick Rick. When I first heard Toro Y Moi's "Still Sound" I was an instant fan. His label held a remix contest and while I liked many of the remixes none of them really were any better than the original. I did really like this Zig Zag remix which kept all the elements and sped them up to house speed. Nothing groundbreaking, but then again why change it up when the original parts were so well done. I thought I would inject a little bit of soul into the blog today. Producer, Alf Alpha djs and produces out of LA LA land in California, and his smooth and sunny vibe reminds me of Day and P.U.T.S., et al. In fact I found him randomly after he posted a comment on one of Dj Day’s songs. Figuring this dude must have good taste; I jumped over and checked his whole catalog. Within the first few seconds of the first song on his Soundcloud page “Circles” you hear what Alf Alpha is all about, smooth samples and tight beats. I also posted up “The Untold Story” which like Circles features the vocals of Gene Evaro Jr., whom has a really unique voice and delivery. Finally I posted up “Come with me” feat Rival, which is a great little disco boogie number, that isn’t all that deep but still elicits some head nodding. His album “Jump Wildly About” is really well done as well and it’s only $5 bucks off of Bandcamp, I highly suggest hooking that up. He also has a free album called “He pleys so Good”, which is okay, it’s more just beat sketches but hey it’s free so I won’t complain. So here you go, enjoy some fresh grooves courtesy of Alf Alpha and follow dude on face book and twitter he if he keeps this up he will be a lot bigger than the 400 or so followers he has now.

From the second release on Funk Weapons, Hush Puppies really helped us define where we wanted our sound to go. We put the record out in 2002, and distributed it with Downtown 161 whom never paid us by the way. Anyway, we were really trying to push the break beats a bit more and move away from the 4/4 of our earlier releases. I think we even pitched this to a couple of labels only to hear they would rather us do another Sol En La Noche. I have no idea of how well it sold since the distro wouldn't even return our calls, but I do see the vinyl out every once in a while.

I did this re-edit years ago, and had it just sitting on the studio computer. I actually found this record at Record Land in Calgary back when I was djing there a lot. The copy I got was horrible, but luckly I found a CD comp with this song on it the very next day at Record Land and had something I could use to edit. Anyway, the song is a dope disco rap jam that features Busy Bee on the MIC. I made and intro and outro and cut some bits up, I wanted a shorter version to mix with instead of the original long ass song. The end result has rocked a couple of parties, and as I am told Neighbour said it was the inspiration for "Night Owl'. In fact he called the early version of "Night Owl", Marvelous Master. Well, here you go, I hope you all have a wonderful New Years Eve.

Here are my top ten songs for 2010, there was a lot of good music out there this year but these are the jams that kept giving. As you can see I’m still feeling what some people would refer to as hipster, but for me these are just well written songs. Songs like “Static on the Wire” are really just well done disco in my eyes, and I really love me some funky disco bass-lines. Ghetto-Funk really made an impression on me this year as well, with the best songs being ghetto-funk remixes of classic hip hop. Also, Kraak & Smaak are back and better than ever with Dynamite, and I like that they offered two different remixes. Neighbour killed it with a bunch of releases this year, but the song I went back to the most was his un-released “Tiger Talking” track, full of his signature funky bass sound. My hommie Dj Soup was in town recently and we swapped a bunch of music, I ran across an awesome AIM track in this thick pile of music and it made me long for some more AIM. I dug out the record, but figured instead of ripping some music I would see if it was available on MP3. To my pleasure, Amazon had all of his releases and even some for free, so I suggest getting on there and grabbing those. Anyway, Concentrate was a huge song for my crew when it came out. I think we all played this record to death and I sort of forgot about it. Well, I'm glad to say I have it and it's in my crate now for those special occasions when song like this needs to be played. Now it's time to dust off those old Backini songs, which would mix well with this.
