Marvelous Three & Younger Generation - Rappin All Over - Rockmaster Rus B Re-edit (Free Download)

I did this re-edit years ago, and had it just sitting on the studio computer. I actually found this record at Record Land in Calgary back when I was djing there a lot. The copy I got was horrible, but luckly I found a CD comp with this song on it the very next day at Record Land and had something I could use to edit. Anyway, the song is a dope disco rap jam that features Busy Bee on the MIC. I made and intro and outro and cut some bits up, I wanted a shorter version to mix with instead of the original long ass song. The end result has rocked a couple of parties, and as I am told Neighbour said it was the inspiration for "Night Owl'. In fact he called the early version of "Night Owl", Marvelous Master. Well, here you go, I hope you all have a wonderful New Years Eve.

Rockmaster Rus B Top Ten for 2010

Here are my top ten songs for 2010, there was a lot of good music out there this year but these are the jams that kept giving. As you can see I’m still feeling what some people would refer to as hipster, but for me these are just well written songs. Songs like “Static on the Wire” are really just well done disco in my eyes, and I really love me some funky disco bass-lines. Ghetto-Funk really made an impression on me this year as well, with the best songs being ghetto-funk remixes of classic hip hop. Also, Kraak & Smaak are back and better than ever with Dynamite, and I like that they offered two different remixes. Neighbour killed it with a bunch of releases this year, but the song I went back to the most was his un-released “Tiger Talking” track, full of his signature funky bass sound. Finally I really started to get into some of the glitch hop sound, with Opiuo really opening my eyes to the funkier side of glitch. So here it is, say what you will but all these songs rock.

1. Breakbot “Make You Mine” Sirusmo Remix
2. AKA JK “Someone Out there” KIM Remix
3. Holy Ghost “Static On the Wire”
4. Phoenix “Rome” Jus One Remix
5. Passion Pit “The Reeling” Calvin Harris Remix
6. Featurecast “Kick It!”
7. Ali B & Nick Thayer “Back to You”
8. Kraak & Smaak “Dynamite”
9. Neighbour “Tiger Talking”
10. Neighbour & Spilt Milk “Get With This” Opiuo Remix

AIM - Concentrate

My hommie Dj Soup was in town recently and we swapped a bunch of music, I ran across an awesome AIM track in this thick pile of music and it made me long for some more AIM. I dug out the record, but figured instead of ripping some music I would see if it was available on MP3. To my pleasure, Amazon had all of his releases and even some for free, so I suggest getting on there and grabbing those. Anyway, Concentrate was a huge song for my crew when it came out. I think we all played this record to death and I sort of forgot about it. Well, I'm glad to say I have it and it's in my crate now for those special occasions when song like this needs to be played. Now it's time to dust off those old Backini songs, which would mix well with this.

Hope your having a wonderful holiday, I know I am enjoying the day off.

Digable Planets got it going on

I was blown away by the first Digable Planets album, it came out when I was in High School and it was something that was on instant rotation in my Sony Walkman cassette player from the moment I got it. I was such a fan that when they came to Colorado for their first tour, I was the second person in line to see the show at the Gothic. This show was also one of the main reasons I became a dj, as this was one of the first times I saw King Britt on the one's and two's handling business. They fell off shortly after the second album, but I found myself pulling out Reachin' from time to time and listening to it would just flood my brain with those old feelings I had when I first heard it. A good friend of mine brought them up the other day on Facebook, so I decided to see if there were any remixes out there that I had not heard yet. Well I found a couple, but I'm going to drop just these two gems on you today. I really like the smooth keys of the Choongum remix, they really transform the track to a different level. Beyond Z take "jettin'" strip out the vocals and do almost a smooth jazz cover of the track, but it still retains enough of the original to make it recognizable. Check em out and holla at me if you got any other remixes of DP I should know about. Peace

All I Want For Christmas Is You

I have to dj a Christmas party tonight and I'm so not looking forward to it, but digging through some fresh Christmas songs is getting me more in the mood. The good folks at Paperecordings let this puppy go today and it's a nice cut from Flash Atkins whom also did a nice album for Paper back in 2003. Nothing groundbreaking or even overtly Christmasy but mos def a nice little lounge groove to play while people are mingling around.

Wicked Lester "Heartbreaker" Remix Free Download

Wicked Lester are dope, these guys have been doing as long as we have been at it and they just continue to kill it. Formed back in 1998 by DJ Vinyl Ritchie also known as Scott Arkwell and studio wonder boy Brian Carson, Wicked Lester make a ton of music in whatever style they deem worthy. Back in 2007 we put out an EP by the boys called the "Heartbreaker EP", and we never put it out digitally. They wanted to include the songs on an album and so we let them retain the rights and we were just happy to recoup our money back on the vinyl and pay them a little bit.

Well the other night, I went back and listened through the EP and I was struck by how fun the whole EP is, I still drop "Suga, Suga" from time to time and have been known to drop Heartbreaker when the mood strikes. On Heartbreaker I really like the way Big Stuff delivers his vocals, he has a great voice and a smooth tone that is truly original. In fact I like his voice so much that I had him guest on a track on the upcoming AGFA album. Anyway, go check out some Wicked Lester and Big Stuff if you get a chance, these are great dudes that produce some amazing music and they fully deserve any support you can give them.

Fascinating Rhythms (Fortune Sound LIVE Promo Mix)

I don't post a ton of mixes on here, but this mix is one of the best I have heard this year. Dude just really kills it all over on this mix, sticking to the latin funk and breaks theme and doing it all LIVE. Seriously download this and support hommie.

"This Mix was recorded LIVE as a promo for my upcoming show at Fortune Sound in Vancouver, Dec.10th 2010

I spent a week listening through records in my collection and ripping them, I also used a few tunes that are only available digitally. It was performed in one take using: Scratch Live, 2 turntables, the Rane TTM57 mixer and 2 Novation 'DIcers'.
It's focus is on tribal rhythms which incorporate afro/latin/funk & swing styles, as well as newly produced music inspired by these styles. I hope you'll all enjoy listening to this mix as much as I enjoyed performing it."

Finally I wanted to send a shout out to my boy Tony as it is his Birthday today, and if your in DC this weekend come out to ESL on Saturday. Our boy Dj Soup from Homebreakin Records will be on the 1's and 2's all night. Frank and I will be posted up next to the booth, not wearing hard shoes.

The Joint (Oldskool Mix) Free DL from BadboE

Our hommie BadboE just gave away this little number today, he did a pretty good job of making it all work together. He flips Sugar Hill, Cheryl Lynn, Tom Browne and a lil Tupac all together that makes for a nice little cut and paste type remix. Which for some reason reminds me of a gig I did at Policy in DC a while back, anyway I was playing this awesome cut and paste thing that DJ B.Cause did and some girl came up and asked if I could play some rap. I knew what she wanted, but decided to play a full set of old school hip hop, which elicited many more requests for something "newer". I really don't miss those gigs, as I felt like I was just destroying my ears for no good reason for people who didn't really give a crap unless they are hearing the new Black Eyed Peas.

The Funk Hunters take on Bassnectar (Free Download)

The Funk Hunters flip Bass Head into a nice little jam, I like the way the use some of Think Tank's vocals from "Drunk on the Funk" along with a bunch of other stuff. Mos def will be dropping this at Bananarchy. Its a cool transition tool as well going from 130 down to 85bpm.

Happy Thanksgiving

I will be away from the computer for a few days, so this will be my last post before next week. Hope you enjoyed this weeks finds, as this has been a stellar week of music finds for me. Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans, and to our international crew word up and thanks so much for supporting Funk Weapons, Baffin Island and Super Hi-Fi.

We have some nice records planned for Winter/Spring 10/11, with an EP in the works from Clayton and Fulcrum. We also have a full EP wrapped up and ready to roll from Kool Hertz that we will be working hard on pushing after the Holiday weekend. Frank has been hard at work in the Studio working on the next AGFA album, I have helped on some tunes and finished up a Crazy Penis type track for the album. We are still working on it and building up the live show, so hopefully next year we can drop that on you.

Okay, take care and I'll leave you with this wonderful number from Sorcerer called Hustlers Play.

Sometimes you dig through soundcloud and you find nothing, other times you just keep hitting on great stuff. I usually just send myself the links that I think are interesting and give them a listen later when I am home and can really scrutinize them. Well tonight I found two fine remixes courtesy of the artists themselves via soundcloud. Here are the goods, first up we have a cool remix from Mr Fudge, of do the right thing, check out his crews soundcloud page as they have a couple of other interesting downloads you might want to scoop up. Lastly we have an electro remix from Mr. Bird, of Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop's version of Al Naafiysh (The Soul).

Lucek Oblatywacz - Wet Panties (Free Download)

I have no idea what this song is actually called, but for some reason I called it Wet Panties. I used this song as the first song on the AGFA podcast 2 mix. I love the way she blends breaks with her edits, they are a bit lo-fi but the funk still shines thru. I suggest digging deeper into Lucek's music if you can find any. I was lucky enough to have one of my bro's hand me off a cd of her tunes a while back.

Basement Freaks - Something Freaky - Radio Edit Free Download

Basement Freaks have a new EP out on Jalapeno Records, called Something Freaky. It's a great song and I had been dropping it in my sets, but I was really impressed with this new Max Sedgley remix. The boys at Jalapeno have given me permission to drop the radio edit for you guys, but I would seek out the extended mix and remixes if you like funky breakbeat with a bit of that freaky Prince flavor.

Really looking forward to djing in Asheville and traveling down with my wife. If your in the area swing by and say hello, I'll also be doing a little surprise set in Chapel Hill.

Phoenix - Rome - Jus One Remix

Phoenix has become one of favorite bands over the last 2 years, and I'm always digging for interesting remixes of their songs. The other day I ran across this boogie remix of Rome and downloaded it and put it in the shuffle. I like to check out songs a bit before I move them into my music folder and unto my serato drive, as I find some songs don't resonate with me after a couple of plays or some songs get more interesting after a couple of plays. This remix of Rome is one of the later, and Jus-One really did a good job on this remix. I really dig the added elements and he moves the song into a whole new light. Be sure to check out some of his other tunes as he is really talented, I also really dug his track Bumbaclart_star-jus_one_VIP_dubplate_mix and the Santigold "L.e.s. artistes" jus one rerub.

NORMSKI -TWISTED DELIGHT

I've always loved the Chic / Queen bassline, and it's been sampled a billion times but somehow Normski made it fun again. I used the Audited Beats edit of this song on my last mix, but this full version is pretty cool. I just found it today, and I think it could come in handy to mix some vocals over and play around with. Anyway, not sure how many downloads he has left on his Soundcloud so grab it soon.

The Breakbeat Junkie - What I Need (DJP's Boombox Remix)

The Breakbeat Junkie and Dj P are 2 of my good pals from over the pond and the Breakbeat Junkie even let me crash at his flat after a night of raving and battle dancing in Nottingham. Anyway, I got this remix update today in Soundcloud and low and behold P has went in and remixed BBJ's "What I need". The boys were also kind enough to offer up the original as well which you can link below. What more can I say Arrested Development, funk and breaks are all in lock step here. Check it

Oh yeah, the Autobot picture of from the new Transformers movie shoot that was done in DC, this was Optimus Primes grill. While I'm not a fan of the movie's I loved Transformers as a kid and thought the truck looked bad ass.

All Good Funk Alliance dj set at U-Street Music Hall Oct. 8th

We will be djing this Friday with Tom B and Jimi Wes at one of the hottest clubs in our nations capital U-Street Music Hall. We had been wanting to get in there ever since it opened and now we have been given the keys to the booth. Expect un-heard jams from our upcoming album, as we will be testing some new cuts. Also a bit of classics and some new joints from our global linkage of friends.

Below is one of the last songs we officially released using samples from our vast record collection. It was a good record for us, as it introduced us to Eastern Europe and helped us gain world-wide recognition. We hope you enjoy it and if you live in DC, please come out on Friday and say hello.

Mash & Munkee - Get Loose

Our last Funk Weapons record from Mash and Munkee has been flying off the shelves, and now the boys have decided to give away an older tune they did. It's pure nu-funk without using trite samples, which I can respect. Not sure how many DL's they have left on Sound Cloud but I would get it now before its gone.

Sard Boogie - Gonzales Ride (Senor Boogie Edit, Rockmaster Further Re-Edit)

I really dug Gonzales Ride, but I needed a nice beat to mix it in and out of, so I used one of Sard Boogie's other beats and inserted some little samples to make it interesting.

Sard Boogie - Gonzales Ride (Senor Boogie Edit, Rockmaster Further Re-Edit)*

You can hear the original here the whole song is really cool.

U-Tern Hip House 08

I first heard about U-Tern when he released a mix via Beat Street records called Body Work, where he busted out a bunch of old school boogie, proto-house and disco in a mega-mix style and he only used the best parts of each song. For me at the time it was really inspiring, as I was going out and and only buying those types of records. Anyway, that put U-Tern on my radar and he has only gotten better with time. He's actually really popular now, running his own radio show, dj nights, dropping original tunes and posting on http://onedaylater.blogspot.com/ from time to time. Seriously, I can't say enough about U-Tern, if you haven't I would mos def seek out some of his stuff.

Anyway, back on to my Hip House theme, U-Tern dropped this mix back in 2008, where he mixed hip hop vocals over old and new house records. I thought the whole mix really worked and I especially love the Outkast section. Below is a link to the mix, check it out and holla at me with any cool Hip House you think I should hear.

Neighbour & Spiltmilk get all Hip House on us

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m pretty gay over Neighbour’s music, he is one of my best friends and probably one of the most prolific producers out there today. He has tackled almost every style with ease, even his dub-step track blew away a lot of the more famous UK stuff I had heard. Well yesterday I was dicking around on the inter-web and I found these two songs via his roommate Trevor Spilt Milk’s Sound Cloud page, apparently Trevor and Neighbour have been mucking about with some classic Hip House vocals and doing their own vintage instrumentals underneath them and I really think they sound good. I can feel the love and care that went into these, and I’m sure you will too. “Stupid Fresh” is my favorite one out of the two just because of that ill bass sound that Neighbour seems to churn out with ease. Check em out and drop these boys some comments and love, they deserve it.

Oh and full disclosure, Trevor did the video for our song SlingShot Boogie which you should check out if you haven’t already.

Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand (Pimpsoul & DJP Remix)

Duck Sauce which is the brain-child of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden, really blew up last year with the song "Anyway". This year they did it again with this Barbara Streisand track, which I have been hearing everywhere. Anyway, my hommies Pimpsoul and P decided to remix the track into some nu-funk and I think they really churned out an interesting take on the song. See the link below as they are now offering it as a free download. Also, if you dig this remix I suggest finding DjP's remix of "Anyway" called "Juicyway", which came out on a stellar 7" from Bureau45 last year.

If you don't know who Pimpsoul or DjP are I highly suggest looking both these cats up, they produce and remix some really funky stuff.

Sard Boogie

I recently ran across Sard Boogie's tracks on a Juno Download excursion and his song "The Standard" really stood out to me. I love his style and it reminds me a lot of Sleeve and some older instrumental hip hop stuff that I love. He is a rapper and producer but I would say his productions fall under a unique vibe, more deep disco boogie and broken beat than straight up sample hip hop. It sounds like dude also can play some keys, which is a nice change of pace. Anyway, check out dudes music via his bandcamp page here and make sure to check out the 2 albums he has posted up, I think he is asking like $2 or $3 dollars for each whole album. Apparently he has a whole new album dropping sometime in October, I personally can't wait.

2 New Baffin Island relases coming soon

I have had these 2 records basically ready to go all Spring, but with all the weddings, day job and baby just didn't have time to focus on getting them out. Now we have full artwork from Marley, Frank mastered all the tunes and everything is ready to go. I will post up audio over the next week, and Groove Dist will be pressing and handling vinyl duties. The digital files will be up as soon as we get the vinyl out via all the good digital shops. Thanks to Badboe and Neighbour for such stellar work, and thanks to Marley for his awesome artwork.

Joe Jackson "Steppin Out" Simple Re-Edit

Sugar Ray is basically Joe Jackson for the 90's set, but I really feel like Joe Jackson had a shit load more soul in him than Sugar Ray could have ever dreamed of. In my quest to expand my soft rock edits collection, I decided to flip "Steppin Out" so that it was mixable. It took a while to find a decent copy, as most of the downloads were really lo-fi but I finally found this remastered version on Amazon of all places and it sounds really close to the vinyl version. Nothing crazy just extended intro and outro for your soft rock set.

Turntable Lab review of "Night Owl Remix EP"

"Whoa! This remix collection is certainly a departure from Funk Weapons and Home Breakin's usual style. The labels are usually known for their quality disco funk and midtempo breaks releases, but here they reach out for the electro, rave, and dubstep set with a wide range of diverse remixes of Neighbour & Think Tank tracks off the Night Owl EP. Closest to the usual AGFA/Homebreakin' sound is the Zoe's Raygun mix of "Night Owl" that features a throwback sci-fi funk feel to it courtesy of Community Recordings' Jon Nezda. Highlights from the rest of the EP include a heavy dubstep version of "Get Up" from Kidgusto, the AGFA Rave Level 9 mix of "Photosynth" that'll make you break out the glowsticks, and a wonky bass version of "Photosynth" from Maelstrom Bass. 9 tracks total."

Thanks fella's, we are most def not going "rave" on our labels but it was fun to dip our toes in that glowing water. While we don't produce a lot of banging stuff, we certainly play it from time to time and it was cool to see these songs in a different light.

On the One Free Download

Back in 2005, Frank and I put out our first LP on Sunswept music. If you haven't heard it, here it is via the Paranoid Sounds blog (thanks Jason L.)

I was going to post up the back story, and get all deep about it, but I can't go there yet. I enjoyed listening back to these tracks, it was interesting to see what we were coming up with back then as a lot of these songs were done in 03 and 04 respectively. Anyway, check it out.

Mash & Munkee "Work It Out EP"

So proud to have another release almost out on Funk Weapons, after having the baby and working the full time job and doing odd work on the weekends I find I have very little time these days for my beloved label. I finally got the artwork back and everything is wrapping up for this release, so excited about this one. It should be out by the end of June.

For our 24th release we wanted to go back to our classic Funk Weapons roots, and to do that we bring you Mash & Munkee aka David Hanke & Kolja Starkowski from Germany. They have produced three slices of supreme nu-funk goodness for all you break beat loving freaks. First off we start with “Work it Out”, a full on funk fest of horns, funky bass, and enough cracking break-beats to satisfy the nimblest of b-boys. “Giving you the Funk” does just that, complete with a jumping live bass-line, building horns and hip hop vocals and groove that eventually builds up to a nice fat synth bass-line that takes the track to the next level. “Make A Difference” gets all Ron Burgundy on us with some funky flute and smooth blaxplotation style horns and of course another funky bass-line to keep the kids body rocking. Finally we round out the package with Neighbour’s remix of “Make a Difference”, who remixes the track in his signature future-boogie style, complete with honking bass-line and smooth chords and injects back in the horns and flute to make the whole thing jam perfect for those late night roller-disco vibes.

Wynd Chymes - Baby You're The One - Rockmaster Rus B Re-Edit

Frank sent over this song the other day and wanted me to cut out the cheesy vocal, which I did for him. I then thought I would see what it sounded like with a little break thrown in and ended up cutting some parts from Lesson 7 which fit the song perfectly. The result is a funky disco breaks re-edit, which Im sure will sound lovely at your lounge or BBQ.
